Exodus International exits ex-gay movement
Exodos International, a ministry group centered on the premise that sexual orientation can be changed, has announced it is shuttering its ministry. Their president, Alan Chambers, apologized for the harm they caused lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. “For quite some time we’ve been imprisoned in a worldview that’s neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical,” Chambers said.
EQCA Executive Director John O’Connor made this statement: “Elimination of any ex-gay or reparative therapy practices should be celebrated. Today’s news is a huge victory for anyone who cares about the wellbeing of our youth. There is room for forgiveness in our movement and I applaud Alan Chambers for displaying incredible courage in his statement announcing the closure of the organization.”
Truth Wins Out, an organization dedicated to dispelling the ex-gay myth, also praised Chambers.
“We applaud and congratulate Alan Chambers for his willingness to approach this decision with honesty, integrity and authenticity,” said Truth Wins Out’s Associate Director Evan Hurst. “It takes a real man to publicly confront the people whose lives were destroyed by his organization’s work, and to take real, concrete action to begin to repair that damage, and to work to ensure that no more lives are destroyed by harmful, discredited ‘ex-gay’ therapy. We look forward to a day when we can truly consider Alan to be an ally.”
